Located next to one of the slopes of the Cabezo del Conquero, the construction of the Huelva Bullring represented an ambitious business project in which many Huelva residents participated. It was on 20 November 1886 that the Huelva Bullring was established as a public limited company (Sociedad Anónima Plaza de Toros de Huelva). Since its construction, the La Merced bullring has been the scene of countless significant bullfighting events, as well as charity festivals with the participation of the region's leading figures.Over the years, due to the decline of interest in bullfighting in the city, the bullring was left in a state of semi-ruin. In response to this situation, the construction of a new arena was proposed. Thus, on 2 August 1968, the Plaza de Toros Monumental de Huelva was inaugurated on the grounds of the city's fairgrounds. The opening poster was composed by Miguel Báez y Espuny "El Litri", Ángel Teruel and Manuel Benítez "El Cordobés", fighting bulls from the livestock of Celestino Cuadri.
