History of the Begoña Fair in Gijón
The Begoña Fair in Gijón is one of the most important bullfighting events in northern Spain and a must-see on the national bullfighting season. It is held every year in August, coinciding with the festivities of Our Lady of Begoña, patron saint of the Asturian city.
The history of bullfighting in Gijón is closely linked to the emblematic El Bibio Bullring, inaugurated in 1888. Since then, this arena has hosted the leading bullfighters of each era, establishing itself as one of the most prestigious bullrings in Spain.
For decades, the Begoña Fair has brought together thousands of fans from Asturias and other regions of Spain, attracted by top-tier lineups and the unique summer atmosphere offered by the city of Gijón. Its bullring has hosted legends of bullfighting such as Manolete, El Cordobés, Curro Romero, José Tomás, Enrique Ponce, Morante de la Puebla, and many other figures who have left memorable afternoons for the fans of Gijón.
Currently, the Begoña Fair continues to be one of the highlights of the Asturian summer, combining tradition, culture, and spectacle. Each edition features bullfights, novilladas (bullfights with young bulls), and other festivities that make Gijón one of the major bullfighting centers of northern Spain.
