The season will open on July 16 with a mixed bullfight. Bulls from Murteira Grave will be fought on horseback, while cattle from Álvaro Núñez and El Freixo will be used for the traditional bullfight. The line-up includes Antonio Ribeiro Telles, Fermín Bohórquez, Morante de la Puebla and novice bullfighter Tomás Bastos.

Morante de la Puebla’s season continues to take shape in a context that seemed unthinkable just a few months ago. The Sevillian matador removed his pigtail on October 12 in Madrid, a gesture many interpreted as a definitive retirement or, at the very least, a long break from the ring.

However, the beginning of 2026 brought an unexpected twist. The Andalusian decided to put the suit of lights back on and resume an activity in the bullring that is gradually becoming far more significant than initially expected.

Morante himself publicly explained the reasons for his return in an interview with the newspaper ABC, leaving one of those statements that sums up the impact of his comeback: “It sounds bad if I say it myself, but I’m coming back because I’m needed.”

At first, the general feeling pointed toward a very limited return, mainly focused on Seville and a few carefully selected appearances. But as the weeks have passed, that scenario has clearly changed.

To the seventeen bullfights officially confirmed so far, there are now closed or highly advanced agreements for some of the major events in the second half of the season. The company BMF is planning the matador’s presence in important fairs such as San Sebastián, held from August 13 to 15; Bilbao, from August 23 to 29; Salamanca, from September 8 to 21; and Logroño, between September 20 and 24.

For now, however, the specific dates on which the Sevillian will appear in those fairs have not yet been officially announced by the companies managing those bullrings.

To this roadmap must also be added his strong presence in El Puerto de Santa María, where he is scheduled to appear on four afternoons, on August 1, 2, 8 and 9, within the series organized by Carlos Zúñiga Jr. The businessman also has Morante confirmed for Gijón and Palencia.

Other venues that, judging by previous seasons, also seem likely to enter his calendar include Roquetas de Mar, Huelva, Palma de Mallorca, Pontevedra, Málaga, Almería, Linares and Cuenca, among others.

By September, other fairs such as Valladolid, Albacete and Guadalajara are also expected to feature Morante. In addition, his inclusion has already been officially confirmed for the Ronda Goyesca Bullfight, the Murcia Fair and the San Miguel Fair in Seville.

There is, however, one absence that continues to draw particular attention: Madrid. The bullring where he removed his pigtail last October 12 does not currently appear in Morante’s plans for 2026. His manager, Pedro Marques, confirmed to ABC that Morante will not fight at Las Ventas this year, although he deeply appreciates the interest shown by the Madrid company and clarified that José Antonio’s return to the capital’s arena will have to wait.

The way events are evolving suggests a campaign far more extensive than originally expected. What first appeared to be a brief comeback to fulfill a few selected commitments has turned into a season with appearances at some of the most demanding venues on the calendar, and with a schedule that could still continue to grow in the coming weeks.

The management company of the Valladolid Bullring, Tauroemoción, has announced this afternoon that it will not be possible to feature two of the leading figures in modern bullfighting at the event scheduled for May 10th in Valladolid. Ultimately, Roca Rey and Morante de la Puebla will be absent from the upcoming bullfight and will be replaced by Alejandro Talavante and Borja Jiménez.

Morante de la Puebla will also return to San Fermín with the Álvaro Núñez ranch, the same breeder with whom he achieved his first Puerta Grande in Pamplona last year. Pablo Aguado and Borja Jiménez are also expected on that bill.

Roca Rey will face bulls from Jandilla and Victoriano del Río. Those lineups are expected to include names such as Alejandro Talavante, Juan Ortega, Tomás Rufo and David de Miranda, who will debut in Pamplona after being recognized by the juries as the standout performer of Seville’s Feria de Abril.

Víctor Hernández will be another of the fair’s new additions. The Madrid-born matador is expected to appear alongside Daniel Luque and Fernando Adrián, who opened the Puerta Grande in 2025, with bulls from Fuente Ymbro.

Jesús Enrique Colombo, currently one of Pamplona’s crowd favorites, will once again appear with the Miura bulls. Manuel Escribano is also expected on that bill. This time, the Zahariche bulls would be featured on July 13.

Fortes is expected to be included with the La Palmosilla corrida following his success last year, while Juan de Castilla would be announced with José Escolar. The fair could also feature names such as Pepe Moral, with strong chances of appearing in the Miura corrida, Román, Aarón Palacio or Samuel Navalón. At this stage, Diego Ventura, Emilio de Justo and Marco Pérez would not be included in the Pamplona lineup.
